There have been times in my life when I have had a hard time praying. Sometimes I was in too much emotional or physical pain, and I couldn’t utter a word. Other times, my prayer life became repetitious, and I was bored. As much as I hate to admit it, there have been moments when I didn’t think praying would make a difference. I was down and discouraged. Today, I want to share what I have learned from anointed Bible study teachers, Christian podcasts, and God’s Word that has brought excitement back to my prayer life. Prayer changes everything, and it can change your life too.

Remember Who You Are Talking To

Prayer is not just a routine or a task. You are talking to the living God, the Creator of the universe, who delights in you. This truth can transform how you approach prayer. When you pray, you enter into the presence of a loving Father who knows you deeply and cares about every detail of your life.

  • God delights in your prayers. He is not distant or uninterested.

  • You are never alone in your struggles. God listens and responds.

  • Prayer is a conversation, not a checklist. Speak honestly and openly.

Keeping this perspective helps you pray with confidence and joy, even when life feels overwhelming.

Keep Knocking and Don’t Give Up

Sometimes it feels like God is silent or slow to answer. That is when persistence in prayer matters most. Jesus taught us to keep knocking and not stop. It’s okay to bring the same prayer request to God again and again.

  • Pray until you feel peace about your request. Peace is often God’s way of saying, “I am working on this.”

  • Trust God’s timing. His answers may come in unexpected ways.

  • Don’t lose heart. Your persistence shows your faith and dependence on God.

This approach helps you stay connected to God through difficult seasons and deepens your trust in His love.

Use a Prayer Journal to Track Your Journey

One practical way to revitalize your prayer life is to keep a prayer journal. Writing down your prayers and God’s answers can encourage you and remind you of His faithfulness.

  • Record your requests clearly. This helps you focus your prayers.

  • Write down answers and moments of peace. Celebrate these as evidence of God’s work.

  • Thank God regularly. Gratitude shifts your heart from asking to praising.

  • Share your answered prayers with others. This encourages both you and your community.

Looking back over months or years of prayer entries reveals how God has moved in your life. It also shows how your concerns and priorities have changed, which can bring fresh perspective.

Break Up Your Prayer Requests to Avoid Monotony

If your prayer requests start to feel repetitive or dull, try organizing them differently. Instead of praying over every request every day, group them and focus on one group at a time.

  • Divide requests by topic or urgency. For example, family, health, work, or spiritual growth.

  • Rotate groups daily or weekly. This keeps your prayers fresh and focused.

  • Pray earnestly and sincerely. Make sure your heart is fully engaged with each request.

This method prevents prayer from becoming a mechanical routine and helps you pray with renewed passion.

Pray with Your Whole Heart

Prayer is most powerful when it comes from a sincere and wholehearted place. God hears the prayers of those who seek Him honestly and deeply.

  • Be honest about your feelings. God welcomes your doubts, fears, and joys.

  • Avoid empty repetition. Focus on meaningful communication.

  • Listen as well as speak. Prayer is a two-way conversation.

When you pray with your whole heart, you build a stronger relationship with God and experience His presence more fully.

How I Learned to Pray

Sitting quietly

Propped up in a chair

What on earth

Was she doing in there?

I’d seen her go in

A few times before

Entering quietly

Shutting the door

I wanted to follow

But somehow, I knew

It was for grown-ups

Must be something they do.

Abraham beget Isaac

She read from this book

My sister would giggle

Then came that look.

We read it through

From cover to cover

Through that warm summer

Next to our mother.

One day she took

Me to her side

It’s time that you know

Where I go hide.

The Bible tells us

In Matthew Chapter 6

To go into a room

To pray in secret.

She took my hand

As I followed behind

Excited to share

In my mother’s great find.

We entered the room

She shut the door

We knelt side by side

There on the floor.

I looked at her bowed

Starting to pray

I listened really close

What on earth would she say?

She thanked the Lord

For this little while

I nudged in real close

Catching her smile.

For I could tell

She was excited to be

Sharing that moment

Kneeling by me.

Thank you for our food

Our daily bread

For the clothes on our backs

A roof over our head.

She prayed for her friends

A neighbor to our right

She prayed for our safety

When out of her sight.

She prayed for her children

One after the other

The first time I witnessed

The love of a mother.

She gave us to God

Trusting in His ways

Asking Him to be with her

Throughout this day.

When she was done

I saw in her eye

A tear from heaven

As she started to cry.

I gave her a shirt sleeve

Having fallen to the floor

I learned a closet becomes a prayer room

Once you shut the door.
